Who here has an ipod touch?

I'm thinking of getting Mr. Magic Helmet an Ipod Touch for xmas, but finding consumer reports has been challenging.

So, I turn to you, my dear f-list, to tell me what you know about them.

Are they worth the money? If so, why? If not, why?

The mister doesn't want a cell phone, so the phone is definitely not in the running.

He has an ipod nano now and uses it daily, so I thought the next best thing would be the Ipod Touch.

So, I KNOW you lot have opinions... so lets have 'em.

Comments

As long as he's not in my seventh grade class, sounds like a great gift. Everyone I know who likes iPod likes it. (Those who don't like iPod won't like it, though.)
LOL - oh dear, it's out of hand, isn't it?

Yes, he loves his Nano, but it's only a 2 gig, and it's not holding it's charge like it used to. I think it's time for a mighty nice upgrade.

Thanks for replying.
My daughter loves hers and has had no trouble whatsoever. If you have specific questions about it, I'd be more than happy to pass them on.
I was wondering if the applications cost any money, and if a 4 gig would be big enough. He doesn't have a whole lot of songs - but I'm guessing the applications will take up quite a bit of room.

Does your daughter find it easy to maneuver though, and did it take her long to learn?

What about the touch screen, does it scratch easily, or is there is coating on it?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get him one. They just look so darn neat.

They are very cool. I will ask her about the apps when she wakes up this morning. I know there are a ton of free ones (my daughter is rather cheap about things *g*) but I will ask her about what types of apps are free/cost $.

Easy to maneuver... definitely. She was zipping through that thing within seconds after getting it out and hooked up. She upgraded from an iPod classic but had no trouble playing with the Touch. Heh.

I'll double check about the screen, as far as a coating on it goes. But I was playing with it last night and the screen was still scratch free. She's had it for a few months now - and you know teenagers, they are usually harder on these things than not.
Okay... she says some of the apps cost money but there are ton of free ones and that they didn't take up too much space.

And she bought a screen protector sheet. A sticky thing that covers the screen. She bought at Apple.

HTH! *G*
((((Hugs)))))

Thanks!!! I have a much better understanding of the Touch now. Literally, all I could find online was people gushing - but I couldn't find exactly what they were gushing about exactly. The salesperson at the store was just useless. All he could tell me about the touch was it was "awesome".

I am actually looking forward to xmas now. I think Mr. M-H is going to love it!

Great idea. There are literally thousands of free applications he can download to use on it too.
Ah, that was my next question - are the applications free? Because I could see how they would charge to download on a phone, but with a Ipod, I wasn't sure how he could manage that.

That does it, he's getting one.

Thanks!
If he already has a Nano then he'll be used to transferring music back and forth between that and his iTunes. Applications are transferred the same way (you can select the iTunes store from the left-hand side of the programme) and download them from there. Applications can be free or cost anything from 99 cents to hundreds of dollars.

WRT your other questions up thread - it's very easy to learn how to use, especially since he's already used to Apple menus, the look, etc. I'd suggest buying a screen protector - I can't remember what it's called but for about $25(AUS) it came with two sticky sheets (one matte and one clear) to put on the screen. If you're buying it from an Apple Store then I'd ask somebody there to put it on so it's completely straight and has no air bubbles.
Very helpful info! I'll be buying from Future Shop, but I'll look into the protector as well. He tends to carry the ipod in his jeans pocket, which is probably not the best place to carry it.

I'm so excited now! I can't wait to see the look on his face when he opens his gift!

It ITouch looks brilliant - and I'm glad to hear no one has really disparaged it.

I inherited one, so it was already second-hand and I've had no problems with it. If there is an operating issue and it freezes, you do a wipe and reinstall via iTunes and everything is hunky dorey. My 13 yr old has pretty much commandeered it and I only really see it when he wants it charged up. The screen is great for games and video downloads. Some games price in at about $6 -- I think I bought a aviation simulator game for that price *!* He'll love it.
They sound bloody impressive!

I'm definitely getting one for the hubby. I have to squirrel money away and save it, because he watches the bank account like a hawk (to be fair, he was frauded once, and now he's militant about checking his account and credit rating) But it makes it hard for me to buy him anything. So I've been withdrawing $20 here and $20 there and I've got it saved in my little Royal Douton "Slytheryn" jar.

I'm really looking forward to xmas this year!
